"Don't try to use him in a half-assed attempt because you might end up being used instead" - Lortelle Kecheln
Ed Rothstaylor is the protagonist of the webnovel The Extra's Academy Survival Guide and a minor villain in the game The Failed Swordsman of Sylvania. He is son of Duke Krepin Rothstaylor and the older brother of Tanya Rothstaylor. He is a student at Sylvania Academy and is the currently disowned heir to the Rothstayler Ducal family. He had been expelled from the Ophilis dorm hall in the beginning of the series and has since been living in the forest north to the academy. After being possessed by the protagonist he has been central to various events that have transpired at the academy as well as being the center of several romantic interests. While initially weaker then a average man despite being a student at the prestigious academy he trained well and has gradually improved his skills as well as earning a reputation as a hard working student. His only aim is to quietly graduate the Sylvania Academy which will enable him to live a comfortable life, however major changes in the storyline unwittingly caused by himself as well as the shadow of his own powerful family and actions of the main characters prove it to be a great obstacle.
History[]
Based on Tanya's recollection of Ed, there was once a time when the original Ed Rothstaylor was a kind older brother. However, following their older sister's death, the original Ed Rothstaylor became exceedingly arrogant and abusive.
He was disowned by his father, Ed Rothstaylor for inappropriately swearing in front of the honorable Princess Penia and expelled from his dorm for illegally intervening with the Sylvania Academy’s entrance exam due to being blinded jealousy, and lastly, for neglecting classes.
Appearance[]
He has short, combed-over blonde hair an blue eyes and according to Lortelle and other characters, is tall and good looking. After having to live and fend for himself in the Northern Forest, Ed has become very muscular.
Personality[]
Prior to the start of the web novel and manwha, Ed Rothstaylor was a typical spoiled noble. He was arrogant over the most middling of achievements and generally didn't have the patience for anything that required effort. At the Rothstaylor manner, he was feared for being physically abusive over the most petty and trivial grievances. He was petty and envious, so much as to attempt to sabotage someone's chances of getting into the school. However, it appears this version of Ed was rather incompetent and unintelligent, as his ruse was quickly discovered. Additionally, this version of Ed was rather vulgar, even in the face of people of higher station than himself, such as Princess Penia.
After the main character woke up as Ed Rothstaylor, Ed's personality was dramatically different. This Ed was very humble and worked hard to improve his skills, abilities, and fix the reputation the previous Ed created. He acts in a more dignified manner and can think rationally. This Ed is generally very unambitious and seeks only to survive the events he knows will come and graduate from Silvenia. To that end, Ed tries to remain uninvolved in other people's lives as much as possible and only intervenes in order to keep the plot he is familiar with on track; however, he admits that his presence alone has caused some events to occur differently. Out of a need to survive, Ed also became quite studious and seeks to acquire any skill that will help him survive in the wilderness and the battles he knows will come.
Thanks to the new Ed's efforts, he has attracted and unintentionally seduced several of his fellow students, most notably Yennekar Palerover, Lortelle Kecheln, and Lucy Maeril. Due to a combination of not wanting to tamper with the plot and occasional inability to recognize their advances, he tends to act indifferent to their attempts and tries to steer the conversation away from possible relationships. However, this does not mean he does not like them. He welcomes Yennekar's presence at his camp and is genuinely grateful for her support. Ed feels comfortable interacting with Yennekar on a more personal level, perhaps do to her presence after the Glasskan Incident to be seemingly unrelated to the plot. Likewise, he frequently turns to Lortel to enlist her aid for various tasks. Perhaps due to Lortel being more assertive in her desire for him, Ed frequently needs to treat Lortel more coldly and in a more professional, business fashion to establish the boundary of what he is and isn't willing to do.
As time went on, Ed's stance towards preserving the plot he originally knew changed and Ed decided to take events into his own hands, if only for his own quality of life and continued survival. He decides that he is not the type of person cruel enough to let Lucy die, even though he knew it was a part of the original story, for example. He becomes more open to closer relationships with the people frequenting his camp, particularly with Yennekar, whom he had grown emotionally very close to, and to some degree even Lortelle, as Ed began showing Lortelle signs of physical affection (at her request), despite initially wanting to keep the relationship strictly professional.
Unlike the original Ed, the new Ed is cunning and a good strategist. While much of his strategic efforts at first were to maintain the original plot, Ed is able to tactically improvise to make up for any deviations in the plot or even change the outcomes of certain events.
