She had long silver hair reaching down to her waist, red pupils, and a red butterfly hair clip on the side. In her disguise as Kylie Echene, she takes on the appearance of a short young girl with short brown hair and red eyes.
Personality[]
As the Saintess, Clarice is expected to be conduct herself with a high moral standard. Having been raised confined to the Church of Telos, Clarice is largely unaware of the world and is generally very sheltered in experience. Her biggest dream is to be able to explore the world outside of the church. To that end, the church arranged for her to be a student at Sylvenia Academy in disguise along with a lookalike, though she must maintain her secret identity or have her freedom revoked. As such, Clarice is intensely fearful of having her identity exposed. Despite being implied to have doubts about the church, she is still a worshipper and would pray for forgiveness for heavy sins. She also is protective of the weak, defending a defeated Tanya Rothstaylor from her older brother despite having only met a few hours earlier. In her disguise as Kylie, she is very talkative about many things. She also does not appear to care much about her academic performance, admitting to Tanya she did not care which class she places in. It is unknown if this is because she truly does not care or an act as part of her disguise to not attract attention to herself.
After meeting Ed, her views on freedom started to evolve after meeting Ed, as she realizes that extreme freedom can come with responsibilities that wear down the joy of life.
Clarice truly cherishes life, freedom, and the people around her. She hates the idea of people dying for her sake.
Plot[]
Prior to enrolling, Clarice often dreamed of freedom, having listened to the bard Adele sing about its joys. Clarice convinces the Church to let her attend Sylvenia Academy, but under the condition that she maintains a disguise and fake name and if anyone discovers her true identity she will be forced to withdraw her enrollment and return to the Church.
At the start of the Class Placement Exam, Clarice, in disguise as Kylie Echene, is found falling out of a tree by Tanya Rothstaylor. The two introduce themselves, though Kylie's chattiness got on Tanya's nerves. Kylie was interested in learning more about the Rothstaylors, though Tanya warns Kylie about some failures within her noble family. Kylie decides to help Tanya get into class A as she herself doesn't care about her own performance. At the summit of the mountain, the two face off against Ed Rothstaylor, who has since beaten every other student who made it that far. Despite their valiant effort, neither of the girls could defeat Ed. Kylie then noticed that during the course of the battle, she lost her hair clip, which held the magic maintaining her disguise. Utterly terrified at the prospect of having her identity exposed and losing her freedom, she remained frozen in fear. Ed, however, noticed and returned the hair clip to her. However, Ed almost accidentally addresses her formally as "my lady," arousing "Kylie"'s suspicions that she has been found out. This suspicion made her afraid of Ed and a few nights later decides to brave an incoming blizzard to get Ed to swear to secrecy. However, upon arriving at Ed's cabin, she is terrified to see blood and an animal carcass inside. She is forced to hide when Ed returns. Ed quickly finds her, but she is so startled and afraid that she accidentally unleashes a blast of her holy magic, knocking Ed back and partially collapsing the cabin on top of him. She assumes she accidentally killed Ed and begins praying for forgiveness. Ed suddenly gets up, which startles "Kylie" so much that she faints. Belle Maya, having learned of Kylie/Clarice sneaking off into the woods, arrives to find "Kylie" cowering next to Ed. As Ed begins to explain the situation, he addresses "Kylie" by her true name, surprising her. However, Ed manages to come up with a viable reason for his knowledge, defuses the situation, and reassures Clarice that he will not reveal her secret. When asked how she felt about Ed's freedom, Clarice reflected upon it and felt that Ed's situation was more akin to surviving. She departs the cabin. Reflecting on this experience, she notes that while Ed's life represents the downsides to freedom, he is a person worth looking up to.
Over the next few weeks, Clarice, in her disguise as Kylie, is seen lazing about in class and reflecting on the events happening around her. One such event, the aftermath of Lucy's rampage and Ed's supposed death, she is deeply concerned at such a grim turn of events. However, she does not have time to think deeply, as she catches sight of the high spirit Merilda in her human form, and thanks to her Holy Magic, she is able to sense the "human's" true identity, which left her awestruck.
Some time later, she receives a letter from the Church of Telos, whose bishop is coming to Sylvenia Academy to check in with her. As she talks and gets her hair styled Belle Maya, Clarice suddenly remembers that the Bishop can read mind control people to extract information from them. Since Ed's knowledge of Clarice's secret would be a violation of her agreement with the Church, Clarice demands to meet with Ed immediately to ensure he does not meet with the Bishop. Thankfully, Clarice is able to warn Ed and get him to agree before a jealous Janica Faylover ends the conversation. Some time after the meeting, the Holy Dragon sealed beneath Sylvenia escapes its prison and rampages throughout the island. Clarice is forced to flee the school while witnessing her personal guard and many other students get slaughtered either protecting her, trying to flee, or fighting back. Ed manages to save her, but delivers the bad news that the crowd on the bridge makes escape impossible. They flee to Ophelis Hall, where they find Belle Maya had activated the defenses, but were too late to save her. She then witnesses Ed shield her from another of the dragon's attacks and impart some advice to her, but at the cost of Ed's life. At this point, Clarice begins breaking down, completely devastated over all the lives lost so she could live. However, when she blinks, she suddenly finds herself back at the cafe where she had met with Ed to keep him away from the Bishop, as if the attack never happened. She immediately checks Ed's body and finds it is entirely uninjured. While at first suspecting it is a dream or vision of the future, it is immediately disproven when she glances at her wrists and sees the blood Ed left on it when pulling her to safety from the dragon, confirming that she had traveled back in time.
