Personality[]
She had a gentle personality, a neat way of taking care of things, and was a model student who didn’t judge a professor by their experience, respecting them all equally. This doesn't prevent her from asserting authority over even her supervisor; albeit, the supervisor was often very clumsy. She also is notably proficient at the tasks her supervisor assigns, and is generally more organized than her.
She is one of Yennekar's closest confidants alongside Clara. Due to her disownment by her family, who lacked the funds to help her attend Sylvenia, Annis has developed a strong sense of independence and self-sufficiency. She is cynical of nobles, whom she views as coddled and spoiled, particularly those of Ed Rothstaylor's reputation, and does not rely on other people's judgments of character, instead preferring to judge a person after she has evaluated them personally. Because of this, and out of her friendship to Yennekar Palerover, she didn't trust Ed's intentions and tested him, intending to break off Yennekar's relationship with him if he was unworthy. Not only did Ed pass the test and prove his sincerity, Annis found the plan ended up backfiring and she started getting feelings for Ed. Annis, realizing that Yennekar will inevitably learn of Annis's actions and will likely misunderstand, begins feeling incredibly guilty at having hurt Yennekar's feelings and has become desperate to show Yennekar she didn't mean any harm. Annis has since tried keeping an emotional distance from Ed to avoid the feelings, though she struggles with this.
History[]
At some point, Annis became a student aide to assistant professor Claire Elfin in order to pay for her tuition, room, and board at Sylvenia Academy.
Annis is first introduced as one of Yennekar Palerover's supporters, praising her as the only winner among the Year 2 students during the joint training tournament. She, Yennekar, and Clara frequently hang out, sharing gossip. After Yennekar's rampage, she testifies in her friend's defense, helping her avoid expulsion. She and Clara later go to comfort Yennekar, assuming she was depressed and weighed down with guilt. However, the two are shocked to learn that Yennekar has developed a crush on someone. Without any experience in dating or romantic emotions, Annis quickly leaves the room, forcing Clara to prevent Yennekar from doing anything to spark rumors over her crush. Annis and Clara later notice Yennekar getting flustered whenever Ed Rothstaylor is nearby, which Annis took offense to, quickly realizing Ed was who Yennekar had a crush on.
Following the death of Professor Glast, Annis enjoys a midday snack with her friends. While Clara tries giving earnest advice and support to Yennekar in her pursuit of Ed, Annis just silently observes. Annis quietly harbors mistrust of Ed because his reputation mostly changed as a byproduct of Clara's gossip and also seeing him as a womanizer due to how several girls seem to be attracted to Ed. Annis resolved to test Ed's character and would intervene to break off the crush to protect Yennekar, if needed. Annis, to her supervisor's surprise, started to practice flirting. Eventually, Ed and a couple other students joined Annis as Claire's assistants. Annis and Ed were assigned to pick a suitable location for the entrance exam for the incoming first year students. During this assignment, Annis attempted to woo Ed through a combination of being a helpless girl in need of protection and empathizing with his circumstances. However, Ed remained unaffected and perplexed by this behavior. Annis found a place to be alone to reflect on her tests. She realized that despite her best efforts, Ed was largely unaffected by it and even began noting his more positive qualities. She then thinks she realizes how girls have been falling for Ed, and assures herself that she would not fall for him the same way. It is implied she continued testing him throughout the day. However, by the evening, Annis had concluded that Ed indeed had reformed, also noting that among the new assistants, only Ed was able to complete all his tasks perfectly and thoroughly. Claire shared with Annis how she had followed Ed one night and learned of his efforts to live in the forest on his own as well as improving his academic standing. Annis realized that Ed is much more hard working and kind than she anticipated, as well as finding him attractive. At that moment, Annis realized that she also had fallen in love with Ed, which flusters her. She is further panicked when she realizes that the only way that Ed could have contracted a spirit is with Yennekar's help, which would also mean the spirit would report everything it saw to Yennekar. She quickly runs out of Claire's office.
Indeed, the spirits did report Annis's actions to Yennekar, but without knowing Annis's intent, Yennekar misinterpreted the actions as genuine flirts. Afterwards, their friendship became cold and Yennekar was so depressed that she could not even say hello. Annis goes to Belle Maya for advice. Annis presents a plan to date another student to distract her from Ed and show to Yennekar that she isn't interested in Ed. However, the head maid advises against this, as it would be very inconsiderate of her towards that other student. Annis is comforted by Belle's advice to see the positive in the situation: Creating this stress in Yennekar would make her go to Ed's camp for comfort. While this eased Annis's guilt over breaking Yennekar's heart, it did little to affect her own feelings towards Ed. On the day of the class assignment exam, she attempts to keep an emotional distance from Ed. However, the equipment she was carrying was heavy. When Ed tried offering to carry it for her, Annis's emotions got the better of her, which led to her stumbling, dropping, and breaking the equipment. To make up for this, Annis helps fight off the first year students.
After the class assignment exam, she reunites with Clara (who was at home in between semesters) and Yennekar. Clara noticed the tension between her two friends, though was unaware of the cause. Yennekar immediately laid out the accusation that Annis flirted with Ed. Annis confessed to doing so, but asserted her reason was that she did not trust Ed's character and needed to test him for Yennekar's sake; however, she (wisely) omitted that she fell for Ed in the process. Annis apologizes to Yennekar and assures her that Ed values her greatly. The two friends hugged and reconciled. After Yennekar left, Annis breaks down, still desperate to try and make her feelings towards Ed go away. She assumes there will be some relief as she believed Ed's time as a fellow coworker is coming to an end, but is quickly mortified at a staff meeting to learn that Claire is extending Ed's employment for the whole academic year.
